How to Get Your Grant: Step-by-Step Guide
1. Choose Your Solar Installer
The SEAI recommends getting quotes from at least 4 different solar installers. Compare their prices, check their products and look for references. You may, like so many others, prefer to go with a local solar installer (e.g., Solar Panels Galway) so support is nearby if needed. Sign a contract only when you're fully satisfied with your choice.
2. Apply for the Grant
Submit your application to SEAI and wait for your grant offer letter. Don't start any work before you receive this approval. The grant offer is valid for 8 months.
If you need to change installers, contact SEAI to cancel your application and submit a new one before any work begins.
3. Get ESB Networks Approval
Your installer, like Solar Panels Galway, will handle the ESB Networks application to connect your solar system to the electricity grid. This must happen before installation and takes about 4 weeks to process.
4. Install Your Solar Panels
Once you have ESB approval, your solar panel installer can fit your new solar panel system at a time that works for you.
5. Get Your BER Assessment
Book a BER assessor right after installation - this speeds up your grant payment. Your solar panel installer may offer to do this for you. You can find an assessor through the SEAI website. They'll give you an assessment during which you can give them details of the system installed along with any other home upgrades you've made.
Your BER assessor will:
- Provide a contract outlining their services and costs
- Complete a thorough assessment of your home
- Complete this step quickly, ideally within 1-3 days
7. Wait for Payment
SEAI processes complete applications typically within 4-6 weeks. Extra time may be needed if they inspect your installation.
Tips for a Smooth Grant Process
Save time and avoid delays by following these practical steps:
- Keep your grant offer details handy - the grant only covers the system size listed in your approval
- If you want to increase your system size, contact the SEAI Solar PV Team before work starts
- Book your BER assessment as soon as your panels are installed (or ask your solar installer to do so)
- Double-check your bank details in the SEAI portal
- Keep all receipts and documents - SEAI may inspect your installation
- Make sure your installer uploads all required papers promptly
